Electric Lineman Job Description

Position Summary: An Electric Lineman installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs overhead and underground electrical power lines and related equipment. This role helps ensure safe, reliable electrical service for residential, commercial, and industrial customers while following all safety standards and utility procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission lines.
  • Inspect power lines, poles, transformers, switches, fuses, and related equipment to identify problems or safety hazards.
  • Respond to power outages, storm damage, emergency repairs, and service interruptions.
  • Climb utility poles, work from bucket trucks, and operate line construction equipment safely.
  • String, splice, terminate, and connect electrical conductors and cables.
  • Use testing equipment to locate faults and verify proper system operation.
  • Follow established safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, fall protection, grounding, and electrical safety practices.
  • Read and interpret work orders, maps, blueprints, diagrams, and utility specifications.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, digger derricks, bucket trucks, and other utility vehicles.
  • Communicate with crew members, supervisors, dispatchers, and customers as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment inspections.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a lineman apprenticeship program or equivalent utility lineworker training preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required.
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution systems, tools, materials, and safety practices.
  • Ability to work safely around energized equipment and high-voltage power lines.
  • CPR, First Aid, OSHA, or electrical safety certifications preferred or required by employer.
  • Ability to pass required background checks, physical exams, and drug screening, if applicable.

  • Physical strength, stamina, balance, and coordination.
  • Comfort working at heights and in confined or outdoor environments.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Dependability and willingness to respond to emergency call-outs, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and storms.
  • Regularly works near energized electrical equipment and at elevated heights.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy tools, materials, and equipment.
  • May be required to stand, climb, bend, kneel, reach, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods.
  • May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, standby duty, and emergency restoration assignments.
