Natural Gas Pipeline Field Technician
Job Summary: The Natural Gas Pipeline Field Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of natural gas pipeline systems, including pipeline right-of-way inspections, equipment maintenance, leak response, documentation, and emergency support. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect pipeline rights-of-way, valve sites, regulator stations, meter stations, and related facilities to identify leaks, damage, encroachments, corrosion concerns, or unsafe conditions.
  • Perform routine operation and maintenance activities on valves, regulators, meters, cathodic protection systems, pressure equipment, and other pipeline assets.
  • Respond to alarms, abnormal operating conditions, suspected leaks, third-party damage, and emergency callouts in accordance with company procedures.
  • Conduct leak surveys, pressure checks, line locating, and other field tests using approved tools, instruments, and safety practices.
  • Assist with pipeline repairs, excavations, pigging operations, tie-ins, purging, pressure testing, and restoration activities.
  • Complete accurate field documentation, work orders, inspection records, maintenance reports, and compliance forms using paper or electronic systems.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, control room personnel, contractors, landowners, emergency responders, and other stakeholders.
  • Follow all company safety policies, environmental requirements, permit conditions, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical, trade school, military, or related field experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in natural gas distribution, transmission pipeline operations, utility maintenance, construction, mechanical maintenance, or industrial field service preferred.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, gas detection equipment, locating equipment, pressure gauges, and basic computer or mobile work management systems.
  • Knowledge of pipeline safety practices, lockout/tagout, confined space awareness, excavation safety, and personal protective equipment requirements preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required Operator Qualification certifications and other job-related training.
  • Ability to pass required background checks, physical exams, and drug screening, if applicable.

  • Ability to read maps, drawings, procedures, work orders, and technical instructions.

  • Sound judgment when responding to emergency or time-sensitive field conditions.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain, including remote pipeline locations, construction sites, and utility rights-of-way.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials as required for field maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in or around excavations and confined or restricted areas when properly trained and authorized.
  • Must be available for overtime, rotating on-call duty, emergency response, and occasional travel as business needs require.
  • Must comply with applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements, safety standards, and company policies.
